Where is everybody?

That’s what Enrico Fermi and Michael Hart wondered in the 20th century. As humankind was preparing to explore the Universe, some scientists like Fermi and Hart were curious as to why we never saw any evidence that extraterrestrial civilizations had or were presently conducting their own cosmic explorations. A quick calculation showed that aliens have had more than enough time to get here. We should have been visited dozens of times by now!

So where is everybody? Are we alone in the Universe? If so, why? Are we the first intelligent civilization. If so, why? Is everyone else hiding? How would we find them? How do we look for alien life and solve this Fermi-Hart paradox?

With Gedanken: Astrobiology, your students will ask their own research questions and develop their own hypotheses concerning this disturbing mystery. Guided by real science and real scientists, they develop critical thinking skills while working together to design their own experiments and space missions to help solve this still unsolved question.
